The gaming industry in Andorra has taken a significant leap forward with the impressive performance of Unnic Casino, which has recorded a staggering €10 million in revenue—a 42% increase within a year of its opening. This development underscores the microstate’s potential as an emerging gaming destination within Europe.

The on-site Unnic Casino: A Profitable Venture

Situated in the posh Unnic Andorra hotel, leisure and entertainment complex, the casino opened in March and has since proven to be a strong economic contributor. Within its first two months, the casino generated a gaming volume exceeding €5.5 million (US$6.03 million), with the government benefitting from 10% of the gross revenue.

Unnic Casino has successfully drawn 30,000 visitors to its gaming floor, while another 25,000 have explored its non-gaming entertainment options. While an initial surge in footfall is expected with any new establishment, maintaining engagement levels will be key to long-term success.

Table Games Drive Player Interest

Unlike traditional markets where slot machines dominate, Unnic has witnessed a strong preference for table games. According to the casino, poker, roulette, and blackjack are the top-performing categories, with gaming machines and sports betting also gaining traction.

The property has also contributed significantly to the local economy, employing 200 individuals and attracting around 1,000 daily visitors. Additionally, one of its major draws is its restaurant scene, with an average of 900 guests dining at the venue each day.

During its grand opening in May, over 2,100 attendees participated in the inauguration event. Data from the launch period indicated that approximately 70% of visitors were Andorran residents, while the remainder comprised tourists, primarily from neighbouring Spain and France.

Unnic was developed in collaboration with Grupo Orenes, a leading Spanish gaming and hospitality operator. The gaming floor alone required an investment of €25 million (US$27.62 million) and spans an impressive 7,500 square meters (80,729 square feet). The venue features 150 slot machines alongside poker, blackjack, and roulette tables. In addition to its gaming operations, Unnic has positioned itself as a premier entertainment hub, hosting live events and boasting a culinary team led by award-winning chefs.

Poker Tournament Expands Market Reach

Unnic Casino has already made significant strides in positioning itself as a poker destination. In April, it hosted Andorra’s first international poker tournament, drawing 223 entries with a €200 (US$220) buy-in. The three-day event exceeded expectations, showcasing the casino’s potential for large-scale tournaments, given its capacity to host up to 800 players.

While the majority of participants were locals, the event also attracted players from France and Spain. The tournament concluded with Andorran player Daniel Vilares securing the top prize of €8,000 (US$8,838), while the second and third-place finishers walked away with €6,500 (US$7,181) and €4,500 (US$4,971), respectively. A total of 27 players finished in the money.

Unnic Casino’s rapid revenue growth signals strong demand for regulated gaming in Andorra.
